Jun 1 CF Presenter

Posted by: airicd

I host the Seattle Web Design Meetup. I'd really like invite someone from Adobe to do a presentation on ColdFusion. Many web developers in Seattle have heard of CF, but don't really know how it compares to other Web scripting languages. I'd also be interested in having presentations on AIR and Flex. Does anyone have any contacts at Adobe?

Thanks,
Eric

Marty Mickelson works at Adobe. He is the co-manager of the Flex User Group. His email is mmickels@adobe.com. Adobe also has an evangelist here in Seattle, but I don't remember his name. I think he is primarily for Flex though.

If you don't have any luck though, let me know and I can probably present on ColdFusion. I have been using it for 10 years. I also use Flex, but Marty and others at the Flex user group are much better at it than I.

cheers,

Steven Rubenstein

Hi Eric,
We're having our monthly meeting on Thursday. You might like to come and meet some possible presenters. :) If not, we can still suggest one for you. When do you need someone?
Thanks!

Thanks, I do plan to be there Thursday night. I'll also send Marty Mickelson an email asking if there's anyone from Adobe who would do a presentation on CF. See you Thursday.

I sent Marty and email about presenting at our next meetup. The next meetup is 6/25 at 7pm at Vivace (near REI). I think Tony will be presenting on firebug next month.

Steven, if Marty can't make it, are you still available.
Thanks,
Eric

Eric,

Yes, I should be available. I will probably try to make it there regardless to check it out.

For the record though, I am definitely capable of presenting on ColdFusion. But I would not be the best choice for presenting Flex unless your group just wants an intro to the basics. And I am not sure Marty would present on ColdFusion, but he can definitely do Flex.

cheers,
Steven

Steven,
Great! I advertise a presentation on ColdFusion for 6/25. If you have any talking points or URLs you'd like me to post, just send them my way.
Thanks,
Eric

I can put together a presentation easily enough. A few quick questions:

1. Is there a projector for the presentation? I can bring my own laptop easily enough.

2. How long should the presentation be?

3. Can you give me an idea of what your group would like to hear? I realize it is mostly designers who are not hard-core programmers. So do they want to hear the basics of what ColdFusion can do and how they can start using it themselves?

You can post the URL for my site at www.emaze.com, but it will be completely overhauled within the next week anyway. If I use PowerPoint or sample files, I can send those to you to post for your group.

cheers,
Steven

Hi Steven,

1. I should be able to get my hands on a projector. (I'll let you know for sure before then)
2. The presentation can be 20-30 minutes, but if that's too long, shorter is fine.
3. The group is pretty broad. We have developers as well as designers, and lots of people who try to do both. So, I'd focus on the ease of using CF, but also the advanced features that allow developers to create well designed reusable code. Many are interested in open source so you could bring up Railo, and other Open Source CF projects. Everyone I've met so far has no idea what CF is other than it’s a server side scripting language. You can even bring up the product ties between CF, Flex and AIR. So, I concentrate on the basics of what CF can do, how to get started using it.

Thanks again for doing this. I look forward to it.
