Apr 12, 2012 JavaScript Performance Optimization
6:30 PM @ Adobe in FremontMake Your JS Speedy!
Building complex JavaScript applications has never been easier, as libraries such as jQuery enable developers to write expressive, simple code that is reliably compatible with a wide variety of browsers. While these frameworks offer many advantages, they also make it relatively easy to write JavaScript code that may not be optimally performant. This session will cover a number of areas of concern when attempting to optimize for performance, demonstrating methodologies, tips and tricks that can be used to avoid some of the more common pitfalls. We will also talk about script loading, and discuss various approaches for loading JavaScript files that can be used to improve the user experience. Ezra Parker has been developing with ColdFusion since 2000, and is an independent consultant and contractor. He is currently the Associate Director for the Model-Glue framework, and assists in organizing the ColdFusion Unconference at Adobe MAX. He also publishes a rather occasional blog at http://www.cfgrok.com.

During this presentation, we'll examine the various layers of the cloud computing stack, and see a demo of how CloudBees (cloudbees.com) is integrating the power of cloud computing into the fabric of the CF runtime to make it easier for developers to build and deploy applications Spike is currently the VP Engineering at CloudBees and lives in the Seattle area.

6:30 PM @ Adobe in FremontA Gentle Introduction to CouchDB
Join us this month as Matt Woodward walks us through a "Gentle Introduction to CouchDB". CouchDB has been described as being built "of the web" which makes it the perfect datastore for Web applications. This presentation will cover the basics of CouchDB, discuss the change in mindset necessary when working with CouchDB versus a traditional relational database, and demonstrate how to use CouchDB in your CFML applications. Come to this presentation to gain a working knowledge of CouchDB and a much more relaxed attitude towards your data.

We might even make it through the entire session without talking about a single *new* feature and instead only talk about how existing features are just getting faster, better and stronger! Designing Great Looking Mobile Apps with Flex (Ryan Stewart) Flex is a powerful way to build enterprise-class applications but it's also a great framework for creating custom, high-design applications. This is even more true when it comes to building mobile applications. Ryan Stewart, a developer evangelist at Adobe will show you how you can go from a well-designed comp to a real application. You'll hear about some of the pitfalls to be aware of, some techniques for scaling content across screens, and where and how to optimize for mobile devices. By the end you'll be ready to jump in and build a mobile application that out classes native iOS or Android apps. We will also be inviting the Flash and Flex User Groups as well. Hope to see you there!

Aug 24, 2010 August CFUG Meeting
6:30pm @ Adobe in FremontShare Your Code!
Sorry for the last minute announcement but this month we'll be holding a code sharing contest. Here's how it works… simply bring a code snippet you're either especially proud of because of its elegance or just really find it useful and share it with the group giving a 5 minute explanation of how it works. At the end of the meeting the best code snippet (voted on by the group) wins a prize with swag awarded to the runners up. The rules are your code snippet must use CF in some way and be portable so that anyone could have it emailed to them and immediately be able to implement it into their projects. Also, sharing your code is NOT required. Feel free to attend and learn from how others code or just bring your CF related questions to the group and let us help you out! Please note that we should be able to meet back in our normal location in the meeting halls. If this is not the case, we will post signs on the doors. Hope to see you there!

Come join us for our monthly CFUG meeting - now on the 4th Tuesday of each month!
NOTE!!!
We are booked in the meeting room “Daroga” in the waterfront building. The entrance to the waterfront building is simply across the street from the plaza building and east on Canal St. Since we will now be located within the main Adobe building, all attendees will be required to sign NDA’s. Adobe is also asking that members try and arrive prior to the meeting. Security will expect members from the ColdFusion User Group to arrive anywhere between 6:00pm and 6:30pm. Any stragglers that come afterwards can obviously still attend, but it will require that they be escorted to the room by either our Adobe sponsor or security.
This month we'll be reviewing the kick-ass ColdFusion development framework called "ColdFusion On Wheels" (or CFWheels for short) that is based on the Ruby On Rails framework that seems to be all the craze these days.
For those that aren't familiar with this framework - or ANY framework for that matter - this would be a great meeting to come to! If you've always thought that development frameworks were too hard/complex, or that you were just too good for them then be forewarned that you may leave this meeting with a change mind. :)
We will also be holding a raffle for a free copy of the ColdFusion/Flex Builder bundle!
UPDATE:
Due to the construction going on at Adobe, we will be meeting in the building across the street from our normal conference center.
