Jul 28 2011 Learning From Others: SQL Meeting Recap

Just wanted to follow up on Tuesday nights meeting as I left feeling fortunate to be able to share with and learn from such a great group of Seattle-area developers. The subject was "SQL Best Practices" but served more as a launching off point for everyone to discuss their own struggles, solutions, and preferences in working with a variety of database technology.

It's meetings like this that help to remind me why the Seattle ColdFusion User Group, and user groups in general are so beneficial - they provide professionals an opportunity to step outside their normal work environment and learn what problems others are faced with and how they've worked to overcome them.

Each month we're fortunate enough to pull a vast array of technical and professional experience into one room where development issues can be shared and discussed, stories can be told, and new approaches can be learned.

As a community manager I realize that the best direction I can bring to the group each month is to help facilitate and foster this type of interaction - one where a junior developer feels comfortable asking questions and a senior developer is encouraged to share and discuss. Hopefully, if all goes well, everyone is able to walk away from each meeting feeling like they learned something new, or at least were encouraged to reflect upon their own processes and experiences and wrestle with how they too might improve.

So thank you again to all the Seattle CFUG attendees from this last week - I look forward to many more opportunities to learn from you all and work to become the best developer I can.

-Brian
